Placement and Transfer

Placement Procedures

Currently, the Center for Writing and Rhetoric encourages students to use directed Self-Placement.

Transfer Information

According to The University of Mississippi’s Fall 2011 Undergraduate Catalog, students may be accepted for transfer from other regionally accredited colleges and universities if they have earned an associate’s degree intended for transfer to a four-year school.

Evaluation of Credits

When a transfer student enrolls at The University of Mississippi, all transfer course work is evaluated and accepted work is recorded as part of the student’s permanent academic record. According to The University of Mississippi’s Fall 2011 Undergraduate Catalog, the “dean of the college or school to which the applicant is admitted determines which transfer credits will apply to the degree program. Students ordinarily receive no transfer credit for courses designed specifically for technical and vocational career programs. The status of a student’s transfer credits will be re-evaluated whenever the student changes her or his degree program” (50).

Credit by Examination

A student must earn 12 hours at The University of Mississippi before any of the following credit-by-examination hours may be recorded on the student’s transcript.

College Level Examination Program (CLEP): Receiving CLEP credit in a specific degree program requires the approval of the dean and department chair concerned prior to taking the examinations.

Students who earn appropriate scores on selected CLEP examinations will receive the following academic credit:

English College Composition
WRIT 101
Credit Hours: 3

Advanced Placement:

Students who participate in the College Entrance Examination Board Advanced Placement (AP) Program offered through their high school, and who earn appropriate scores on the AP examination, will receive the following academic credit.

English Lit/Comp or Lang/Comp

AP Score: 3-4
UM Course: WRIT 101
Credit Hours: 3

AP Score- 5
UM Courses: WRIT 101/102
Credit Hours: 6

AP credit outcomes (the following examples are ways in which AP credit may be used for WRIT 100, 101, or 102 courses).

1. (Credit of 3 or higher gives 101 credit) – Unofficial Document Presented to CWR

  • Student will be conditionally booked in Writ 102 (this will temporarily hold a spot on the student’s schedule)
  • For CWR courses, conditional bookings are handled by the CWR associate director
  • It is the student’s responsibility to make sure AP credit gets transferred and is recorded by UM Registrar
  • It is the student’s responsibility to notify the CWR associate director by email (in writing) that the AP credit has been recorded by UM Registrar (it is possible for the student to obtain a copy of the letter from the UM registrar that gives the notice of advanced placement examination scores and any credit(s) that may be applied toward CWR courses)
  • Upon receipt of notification, the CWR will then change the conditional booking status to confirmed booking status
  • If conditional booking is not removed by first week of August, the system will drop conditionally booked students from the course schedule.

2. AP (Credit of 3 or higher gives 101 credit) – No Document Presented, Only the Student’s Word is Given

  • Nothing can be done until student provides some sort of proof that he/she has successfully received AP credit for English and has scored a 3 or higher in order to receive credit for Writ 101 (or Engl 101)
  • Notice of AP examination scores and the evaluation of such scores is handled by the Office of Admissions and Enrollment Services, which can be contacted via telephone at 662-915-7226

3. Transfer Credit from an Outside Source – Transfer Agreement on File and Unofficial Transcript presented by student to CWR (or another department on campus)

  • The CWR associate director confirms that a transfer agreement is in place which indicates the course the student has successfully completed can transfer as Engl 101 or Writ 101 (see the UM Transfer Course Equivalencies, found under the Academics tab in the student section of the My Ole Miss web portal)
  • If such an agreement is in place, student may be conditionally booked in Writ 102 (this will temporarily hold a spot on the student’s schedule)
  • For CWR courses, conditional bookings are handled by the CWR associate director
  • It is the student’s responsibility to make sure transfer credit gets sent to and is recorded by UM Registrar
  • It is the student’s responsibility to notify the CWR associate director by email (in writing) with the information that such credit has been recorded by the UM Registrar
  • Upon such notification, the CWR associate director will remove the conditional booking
  • If conditional booking is not removed by the first week of August, the system will drop conditionally booked students from the course schedule

4. Transfer Credit from an Outside Source – Transfer Agreement Not on File and Student Has No Document to Present (simply word of mouth made by student)

  • Student must have official transcript sent to Registrar
  • Student can send unofficial transcript to the CWR associate director, who may then conditionally book the student
  • The CWR associate director will verify the transfer agreement; if the transfer credit can be confirmed, and the CWR can give Engl 101 or Writ 101 credit, and if the student submits an unofficial copy of their transcript, then the student’s choice of course may be conditionally booked
  • It is the student’s responsibility to make sure transfer credit (by way of official transcript) gets sent to and is recorded by UM Registrar
  • It is the student’s responsibility to notify the CWR associate director by email (in writing) with the information that the course transfer credit has been recorded by UM Registrar
  • The CWR associate director will then remove the conditional booking
  • If the conditional booking is not removed by first week of August, the system will drop conditionally booked students from the course schedule
